Montana’s pulse growers don’t just produce high-quality chickpeas, lentils, and dry peas—they also help shape the national and state policies that make it possible to grow and market them. A portion of every Montana pulse checkoff dollar supports this mission through advocacy and outreach, helping ensure that farmers have a voice in the decisions that affect their bottom line.
Much of this work is carried out by USA Pulses, which receives funding from the Montana pulse checkoff program and represents growers on the national stage. Over the past year, USADPLC has led the charge in Washington D.C. on behalf of Montana’s pulse growers, participating in more than 100 meetings with Senators, Representatives, and key congressional staff this past year. They work to secure appropriations, defend crop insurance programs, address tariffs and trade mitigation issues, and advocate for pulse crop priorities in the next Farm Bill.
Why Now Matters More Than Ever
The timing of this work is crucial. The current Farm Bill extension is set to expire in just five months, and without strong representation, Montana’s growers risk being left behind. Beyond the Farm Bill, emerging policy shifts tied to FDA regulations, climate-related ag priorities, and growing federal interest in regenerative agriculture are redefining what’s next for farmers.
Advocates supported by Montana’s checkoff dollars are also engaging at the state level in Helena, and working closely with agencies like the USDA, FDA, and EPA. Non-governmental organizations that purchase U.S. pulse crops under international food aid programs like PL 480 are also part of these critical conversations.ns.
Policy Engagement is a Strategic Investment
This isn’t just about staying informed—it’s about leading the conversation. Montana’s pulse growers, who produce more tons of pulses than anyone else, are facing challenges that go beyond the farm gate. Issues like global trade disruptions, shifting market preferences, and changes to risk management tools all require a strong, unified voice in government.
By investing in advocacy through the pulse checkoff program, Montana’s growers are investing in the stability and growth of their industry. With USADPLC’s boots on the ground in D.C. and active engagement at the state level, growers have seasoned experts ensuring their needs are heard and respected.
