How to Check for Nodulation in Your Pulse Crop

In the world of pulse production, nodulation is where the magic happens. It’s how pulse crops like lentils, chickpeas, and dry peas fix atmospheric nitrogen—reducing your fertilizer costs and enriching your soil. But this process isn’t automatic. It depends on live, compatible rhizobia, correct seeding practices, and environmental conditions.

If anything goes wrong, your crop could miss out on one of the key benefits of growing pulses: self-supplied nitrogen. And that could cost you.

What Is Nodulation and Why Does It Matter?

When it works properly, your pulse crop supplies much of its own nitrogen. When it doesn’t, you’re growing a nitrogen-hungry crop without fertilizer—and that spells trouble for yields.

When to Scout for Nodules

According to Alberta Pulse Growers and researchers at NDSU Extension, the ideal time to check for nodulation is at the two- to four-leaf stage, before you apply post-emergence herbicides. By this point, the plant should have formed visible nodules if conditions are right.

Look for early signs of trouble:

  • Plants that appear pale green or stunted
  • Uneven growth or patchy areas in the field
  • A history of missed or ineffective inoculation

Even if your field looks healthy, it’s still good practice to check a few representative plants early in the season—especially if you’ve had issues at seeding.

How to Check for Nodulation

  1. Dig up several plants from different areas of the field.
  2. Gently wash soil off the roots—don’t break off the nodules.
  3. Slice open several nodules with a knife or fingernail.
  4. Healthy, active nodules will be pink to red inside, due to the presence of leghemoglobin (the same oxygen-carrying pigment that makes blood red).

White or green nodules indicate that rhizobia have not yet begun fixing nitrogen—or the nodules are inactive altogether.

Common Nodulation Mistakes

Problems often start at seeding:

  • Forgot to inoculate or assumed it was included with the seed treatment.
  • Used expired or mishandled inoculant (exposure to heat or UV can kill rhizobia).
  • Seed treatments were incompatible with the inoculant, reducing rhizobial viability.

Granular inoculants tend to survive longer and provide more consistent nodulation across a field, though they can be more expensive than liquid or peat-based options.

Pest Pressure Can Disrupt Nodulation

One under-recognized cause of nodulation failure is pea leaf weevil. Despite its name, this pest feeds on fababeans, field peas, and lentils. While the notching in leaves may be the first visible sign, the real damage happens underground—where larvae chew off the nodules themselves.

This makes seed-applied insecticides an important part of the equation, especially in areas where the pest has been reported.

What If You Discover a Nodulation Problem?

If you catch the issue early—again, at the two- to four-leaf stage—you can consider a rescue application of nitrogen. However, applying a small amount won’t help and may even suppress future nodulation. According to RealAgriculture’s Pulse School, a 50-bushel fababean crop can remove over 140 pounds of nitrogen per acre, just in the seed. A rescue treatment needs to be substantial and carefully timed. And while most pulse crop farmers in Montana don’t grow many fababeans, this is still a relatable figure for those who grow any kind of pulse plants.

Later in the season, your options become limited, as driving equipment into a tall pulse crop can cause additional damage. That’s why early scouting is so critical.
