Montana Representative Troy Downing Tours Montana Pulse Facility

Montana’s pulse industry had an important opportunity to showcase its work when Rep. Troy Downing visited Columbia Grain’s processing facility. Joined by industry representatives, growers, and media, Downing toured the plant and engaged in a wide-ranging conversation about the challenges and opportunities facing pulse crops in the state.

Plant Tour Highlights

The group toured the facility for approximately 40 minutes, focusing primarily on the advanced color sorter and automated bagging line. Though time was limited, the tour provided Downing with a firsthand look at the innovation and efficiency that goes into pulse processing.

Coffee Talk & Key Issues

Following the tour, attendees gathered for a coffee talk that stretched well beyond its scheduled time. Downing asked thoughtful questions and dove deep into issues including export tariffs, the need for potential processor financial support, and the importance of crop insurance. He also heard concerns about sprout damage in the region, port access and reduced hours, and potential base acre increases.

Montana pulse grower Paul Kanning remarked, “The event with Rep. Downing was fantastic, he really enjoyed learning about pulse processing & asked many questions.” Paul added, “The coffee talk ended up going twice as long as planned because he kept engaging in the conversation.”

Looking Ahead: Montana Ag Summit

Rep. Downing also revealed plans to organize a Montana Ag Summit in the near future, with invitations extended to leaders such as Secretary Rollins and House Ag Committee Chair GT Thompson. While details are still pending, the summit is expected to take place in Great Falls and include broad participation from Montana agriculture groups.

The Bottom Line:

The visit not only highlighted the value of Montana’s pulse sector but also opened the door for continued conversations on trade, food aid, and long-term policy support. With leaders like Downing showing strong engagement, Montana’s pulse growers and processors are hopeful their concerns and contributions will be front and center in future agricultural discussions.
